CT scan

A CT (computed tomography) scan is a type of x-ray examination that provides a series of cross-sectional images through part of the body to assist in determining the cause of your illness. Nothing actually touches you during the examination.

You may eat a light meal and drink normally before you come to the hospital. If you are having an abdominal scan you may be asked to arrive one hour before the time of your scan to drink some fluid containing a dilute x-ray dye. This outlines the bowel more clearly. Some patients may need an injection to clarify any areas that are felt necessary by the Consultant Radiologist.

You will be asked to lie down for the scan and you may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds while images are taken. The scan will take approximately twenty minutes.

The radiographer will be in the control room next door during the scan observing you through the window and you will be able to speak to each other over the intercom.

The scan is completely painless and you will be able to go home soon afterwards.

The pictures will be processed within half an hour of the scan, and will be reported by the Radiologist on the same day. The report will normally be sent to your doctor on the same day, by fax if necessary.
